Tributes are being paid to the late Tom O' Brien from Longford town who died yesterday evening.
Tom was a well-known figure in the town having been involved with Tops of the Town and other entertainment groups over many years, as well as working as a postman in more recent times.
Many tributes are being paid online today describing Tom as a gentleman who had a great sense of humour and humanity generally.
Following his diagnosis with cancer Tom recorded a song written by his friend Eamon O' Ceallaigh in January of this year which went to Number One in the iTunes charts, and raised €50,000 for the Irish Cancer Society.
So sad to hear of the death of one of Longford's great characters. This sham brought a smile to the face of so many shams . . . https://t.co/a3ImrI1hLz
