CSO finds level of afforestation in Roscommon last year 'significant'

Several hundred football fields of new forestry was planted in Roscommon last year.

The level of afforestation in Roscommon last year has been described as 'significant'.

New figures from the CSO reveal that 190 hectares were planted in the county last year- the second highest land total in all of Ireland.

Cork accounted for 17% of the total afforested area in 2021 followed by Roscommon at 9.4% Clare at 8.6% and Cavan at 7.9%.

98 hectares were afforested in County Leitrim last year, which represented 4.8% of the national total and the 70 hectares planted in County Longford also represented 3.4% of the national total.

Gerry Brady works in the Climate and Environment section of the Central Statistics Office.

He admits the figure for Roscommon is high, relative to the size of the county:
