Councillor calls for re-designation of Longford approach road

A local councillor has called for the re-designation of a major road on the approach to the county town.

The motion by Councillor Seamus Butler came before the most recent meeting of the Longford Municipal District.

He argued that delisting the N63 as a national route from the N4 roundabout to the Ballyminon roundabout on the Athlone road would be a 'generational improvement' to Longford Town.

The Longford Town section would then be converted to R status while the N4 and N5 across Ballyminion would become the new N63.

In a response, the council confirmed they would consider the proposal but warned that listing a road as R may have an impact on future funding for the upkeep of the road.
