People in Roscommon have been remembering the 40th anniversary of the deaths of Detective Garda John Morley and Garda Henry Byrne at Shannon's Cross outside Loughglynn.

Both gardai were shot dead as they tried to intercept a gang who had robbed the bank in Ballaghaderreen a short time earlier on the 7th of July in 1980.

Local GP Dr Greg Kelly who was called to the scene on the day said he still remembers it clearly and the sense of shock that was evident there.

He told the Joe Finnegan show that Detective Garda John Morley had been brought in a car to meet an ambulance that had been sent for but tragically died before further help could be accessed.

Retired Garda Martin Duggan who had served with both men says even though four decades have passed the sense of shock and loss is never far away, and people's thoughts are with the two families who were left behind.
