The Chairperson of the National Women's Council says the rights of women who care for family members needs to be addressed.

Longford woman Louise Lovett says the issue of women in caring roles is a major challenge which she hopes to tackle over the next couple of years.

Louise stepped down from her role as CEO of Longford Women's Link in recent weeks but says she hopes to continue with advocating for women through her voluntary role as Chairperson of the National Women's Council.

The Longford woman was appointed to the role in June of 2020 and says the rights of women who care for other members of their family on a permanent basis is an issue that needs to be highlighted.

She says many women's entitlements to pensions are adversely effected as a result of their unpaid work as carers and the establishment of a pension's commission should allow that to be recognised…
