Roscommon County Council spent over €550,000 euro on cleaning up litter and illegal dumping in the 12 months until May this year.

Responding to a question from Councillor Tom Crosby, the local authority has confirmed that it received just €5,550 in fines in the same time period.

The Bottle Bank in Tarmonbarry has been closed until further notice due to what the council say is 'cross contamination' after papers and other waste materials were put into the containers.

Councillor Crosby has sought a change in legislation in respect of naming and shaming, and an increase in fines previously.

He says he'll be seeking action from the new government because the situation as it stands is unacceptable.
