ESB Networks has confirmed that a power outage in Longford town this afternoon was caused by a bird strike on power lines between Longford and Ballinalee.
The company says the line between Longford town and Ballinalee tripped this afternoon at 3:35 pm as a result of birdlife colliding with the overhead line.
The outage initially impacted on 1,600 homes, farms and businesses and ESB says power was restored to the majority of customers within the hour, some having to wait until 7pm to be reconnected.
It’s the second time in as many months that birds colliding with power lines has caused disruption to the electricity supply locally.
A two hour outage in the Strokestown area in early December of last year was as a result of up to three swans having collided with power lines between Rooskey and Strokestown.
