A post-mortem is due to take place today on the body of a man in his 70s who died following a road crash in Leitrim on Tuesday morning.

The man was involved in a single-vehicle crash at around 11am at Killaneen, Ballinamore on the R208 at around 11am.

The man, who was the only occupant of the car, suffered serious injuries in the crash and was taken to Cavan General Hospital where he later died.

The road was closed for a forensic examination last night but has since re-opened to traffic.

A post mortem on his remains is due to take place at Sligo University hospital later today.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward. Gardaí are also appealing for any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) who were travelling in the area between 10:45am - 11:15am to make this footage available to Gardaí and anyone with any information is asked to contact Carrick on Shannon Garda station on 071 965 0510
