A lecturer in Microbiology at Athlone IT is welcoming yesterday's announcement of a Covid vaccine by drugs company Pfizer as a very good first step.
Dr Andy Fogarty says he expects up to two other vaccines to be announced before the end of this year and he says it's very good news that the Pfizer drug appears to have a 90% success rate, when most ordinary vaccines have more like a 60 to 70% result.
He says there are obviously many questions still to be answered about whether the drug will work for people over 70, how fast it can be manufactured, how long immunity will last, and how many people will trust these new vaccines enough to want to try them.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan show this morning Dr Fogarty says while there's still a long time involved while these new drugs are rolled out they will be a huge help over the next year as we continue living with the Covid-19 virus.
