A new Text Alert app for Longford is to be rolled out nationwide over the coming weeks.
The app which is supported by Longford County Council and Gardaí has been piloted in the north Longford area and an official launch was held on Friday night.
The app is free to download and it's aimed at creating a network of instant information so that crimes can be prevented, while also helping to detect and apprehend criminals.
It's hoped the majority of local groups will come on board in the coming weeks and months across the county.
Christine Collins who is Broadband officer with Longford Council says they've been mapping the parts of the county that have a text alert system over recent months
She says they hope to be able to bring new areas under the scheme.
