A float that made a humourous reference to the controversy over an Aldi store planned for Boyle was one of the highlights of the town's St Patrick's Day parade this afternoon.
A golf buggy had a sign that read: 'Can't PLAN anything in this OFFALY bad weather.'
This was a reference to the fact an Offaly resident has lodged an appeal to An Coimisiún Pleanála against Roscommon County Council's decision to grant planning permission for an Aldi store on Patrick Street in Boyle.
Hundreds of people lined the streets of the town for the parade this afternoon, with a range of flouts, including from Boyle Community Tennis Club, Boyle Celtic FC, Boyle Arts Festival, Victoria Walker Dance School, Boyle Ladies' GAA and Boyle Family Resource Centre.
There was also plenty of vintage cars and a memorable display of kung fu fighting.
The parade was led by grand marshal Paul Forde, who arrived in a vintage tractor at the start. He recently retired as the town's postmaster after over 20 years.
