Urgent appeals for caution in Roscommon as road deaths rise

Five people have died in crashes in the Shannonside region this year - four in Roscommon and one in Leitrim.

The head of Ballaghaderreen Fire Station is urging people to be cautious after alarming new figures on road deaths.

Roscommon has recorded the third highest rate of road deaths in the country this year, on a population basis.

Councillor Micheál Frain, from Ballaghaderreen, says action needs to be taken:

Longford is the only county in Ireland that has avoided a road-death this year.

A total of 139 people have died in collisions around the country this year - two more than for the same period last year.
