Tinder to offer users chance to scan ID to verify identity

The dating app ran a successful trial in Japan recently.

Tinder has announced it's going to offer users the opportunity to scan ID to verify their identity.

It will be an optional setting on the dating app, but there are calls to make it compulsory.

This follows a successful system in Japan, where Tinder users have to prove they're over 18 years old to use the app.

It's going to be an optional feature, for now at least and Tinder's calling a test-and-learn approach.

However, Mary Crilly, CEO of the Sexual Violence Centre in Co. Cork, thinks the app's owners should go further.

On the street, public opinion was definitive.

This is a good thing for trust and safety.

Tinder says it'll seek expert advice to see which forms of ID are acceptable from state to state.
