Tanaiste confirms NPHET considering re-introducing testing for close contacts in schools

Schools are due to re-open their doors on Monday after the mid-term break.

NPHET is considering re-introducing Covid testing for close contacts of confirmed cases in primary schools.

The new system may see pupils given antigen tests if they're a close contact without symptoms.

That was John Boyle of the Irish National Teachers' Organisation speaking almost exactly a month ago when it was confirmed testing of close contacts in primary schools was to be stopped.

Tánaiste Leo Varadkar has confirmed they're now thinking of bringing it back.

This morning INTO President Joe McKeown said, I told you so.

Social Democrats co-leader Catherine Murphy says there's now a question-mark over schools.

She suggests more could be done around ventilation.

But both the Taoiseach and the Tánaiste have said they're not contemplating school closures, and there would have to be a serious change in the current situation to do so.
