Stephen Silver to continue giving evidence at his murder trial today

The 46-year-old took the stand yesterday in week four of his trial.

The man accused of the murder of a garda in Castlerea over two years ago is due to continue giving evidence at his trial today.

Stephen Silver, of Aughaward, Foxford, Mayo, told the Central Criminal Court on Wednesday that he has a history of psychiatric illness.

The 46-year-old motorbike mechanic denies murdering Detective Garda Colm Horkan but has pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter by diminished responsibility. The jury of seven men and five women yesterday heard on the morning of the fatal shooting, the accused left a hotel in Dublin after believing the woman he had stayed there with was working with the British spy agency, MI6.

The court also heard the day before the shooting he thought about booking himself in for some respite because he felt 'the stress' was really getting to him.
