The St Mel's college campus in Longford is likely to see significant works to enable the amalgamation of two historic secondary schools in the town. The new school will be known as Coláiste Mel agus Mhuire and will be based on the St Mel's site. School management is hopeful that the process will be complete for the 2027 academic year.
The change will see over a thousand students on the one campus in the centre of Longford town. Bishop of Ardagh & Clonmacnois Paul Connell says that students from the Convent will not be transferred to the Mel's campus until the facilities are there to support them:
