Sligo Hospital ED nurse fears lack of staff will leave patients at risk

Almost 30 people were waiting at the ED in Sligo today

A nurse working in one of the busiest Emergency Department's in the region says staff shortages are leaving patients at risk of failings in their care .

Sligo University Hospital has reported very high numbers of people waiting to be admitted through its ED in the last number of weeks.

According to today's INMO figures, 27peoope, are waiting at the north-west hospital - with 18 alone in the ED and nine in wards elsewhere.

Earlier this week nurses at Mullingar Hospital staged a one-hour protest over conditions in its ED due to staff shortages.

Mary McCaffrey is a nurse working in the ED at Sligo University Hospital and she says the situation hospital staff are facing is unsafe:
