Serious road safety concerns have been raised at a primary school in south Roscommon. Parents at Newtown National School say the lack of parking spaces is putting children at risk from speeding motorists. The school near Creagh, Ballinasloe is located on the Clooncoran-Ballygill Road just off the R357. Cllrs John Keogh and Emer Kelly raised the issue at today's Athlone Municipal District meeting. They called on Roscommon County Council to review safety around the school and expand safety measures.
The local authority said it wasn't in a position to add extra parking spaces but would install road markings. Cllr John Keogh says cutting back grass verges could be an option. He also highlighted the need to address driver behaviour near the school:
