A Fine Gael council seat in North Longford will be filled this evening after the holder was elected to the Seanad. Paraic Brady was voted into the upper house following the Seanad election in January, leaving his seat in the Granard Municipal District empty. Three candidates will battle it out for the seat at the party convention tonight in Aughnacliffe.
Senator Brady's brother Cian Brady, a Drumlish man active in the community and the local GAA Club is seeking to take the seat. He's facing former councillor Colin Dalton who lost his seat by a handful of votes in the June local elections. Granard-based Kathleen McGahern, who was a member of the Longford-Westmeath Education and Training Board, and former Secretary of the Community Employment scheme is the third candidate seeking votes. Party members in the Granard Local Electoral Area will vote and select a candidate tonight in the Colmcille Community Centre in Aughnacliffe.
