'Save Leitrim' hope public consultation on forestry policy will lead to change

The government is to canvass the public's thoughts on forestry as part of a new national programme.

A Leitrim environmental group hope a new public consultation process on the future of forestry in Ireland will lead to a change in the national approach to planting.

This week Minister Pippa Hackett revealed plans for an extensive public and stakeholder consultation on a new National Forest Strategy and the next Forestry Programme.

It's expected that a 'citizens assembly' style group will be formed to canvass opinions on future forestry policies and schemes.

The Minister has previously refused to meet with the Save Leitrim group, claiming that there are other forums for the group to engage with the government about afforestation policy.
