The death has taken place of the renowned Roscommon boatbuilder Jimmy Furey of Mount Plunkett, Lecarrow at the age of 94.

Jimmy had made his living as an eel fisherman when he was younger and had been repairing boats to supplement his income at first.

He also made rowing boats but then began making racing dinghy's from larch when he was asked to build one in the early '70s.

He went on to build several of the hugely intricate boats from the 70's up until the mid 2000s, with the process involving the overlapping of the larch planks from the keel up.

The Roscommon man also made detailed scale models several of which went on to win awards such as the Duke of Edinburgh's Gold Medal, and others went on permanent display including at the Greenwich Maritime Museum.

Jimmy Furey was laid to rest today in Gailey cemetery following funeral mass in St John's Church in Lecarrow.
