Roscommon man who died in Kerry drowning tragedy named

The Athlone native died following a tragic incident at the popular beach on Thursday evening.

A man in his 50s who died in a double drowning in Co Kerry yesterday has been named locally.

Dessie Byrne, who is originally from Baylough in Athlone but has been living in Lecarrow, Co Roscommon for the past 20 years, drowned yesterday evening at Ballybunion beach in Co Kerry.

His older sister, who has an address in Sweden, was also pronounced dead at the scene at Men’s Beach, Ballybunion.

A post mortem is due to be carried out on both of their bodies.
