Roscommon included scrambler in bike statistics

The RSA has warned that scramblers being used on rural roads, farmland and bog roads

New research from the Road Safety Authority is highlighting the risks linked to scrambler bikes on Irish roads - with over 50 people killed or seriously injured in recent years.

The RSA review of Garda collision data shows that three people died and more than fifty others were seriously injured in scrambler-related crashes between 2021 and 2025.

One of these occurred in county Roscommon.

Most of those involved in crashes were young males under 25.

While many incidents happen in urban areas, the RSA has warned that scramblers being used on rural roads, farmland and bog roads in counties such as the Shannonside region can also pose serious dangers.

Road safety officials say the bikes are designed strictly for controlled off-road environments and are urging parents and young riders to understand the risks.

Meanwhile, the Government is preparing new regulations expected to ban scramblers from public spaces and strengthen Garda powers to seize them.]
