Gardai in Roscommon are appealing for witnesses to an incident at the level crossing in Knockcroghery on Tuesday morning.

A red van, towing a trailer, smashed through the barrier as it passed from Roscommon to Athlone just after 8.30am

The vehicle failed to stop after the incident and the damage to the barrier caused delays of up to 40 minutes to trains services on the Westport-Heuston line throughout yesterday morning.

Gardai are appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time, or who may have seen the red van and trailer, or the driver themselves, to contact them, at 090-6638300.

A barrier at the same level crossing was also badly damaged following a similar incident involving a car in early March.
