Roscommon Councillors seek meeting with Agri Minister over flooded lake

The issue was raised at this month's council meeting.

Roscommon County Council is to ask the Minister for Agriculture to meet with residents of Lough Funshinagh to discuss compensating farmers living beside the flooded lake.

Councillor Tony Ward issued a motion at the April meeting of the local authority seeking compensation for farmers who are unable to access land or use if for nay agricultural practices due to the excess water in the Rahara area.

He suggested that a special survey takes place of the Special Area of Conservation on a habitate which was described as "destroyed" by the flooding.

His motion received widespread support with fellow councillors also suggesting the Minister should meet elected officials as well as residents and IFA representatives to discuss the flooding crisis and its impact on farmers' incomes.
