Elphin resident Robert Pether, who has been in jail in Iraq for over four years, has been diagnosed with lung cancer.
His wife, Desree, who lives in the north Roscommon town with their children, confirmed the news this evening.
Robert's health has deteriorated over recent weeks before the cancer diagnosis. There are fears he will die soon.
He has been in prison since 2021 because of a contract dispute between his employer and the Central Bank of Iraq.
Tánaiste and Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Harris recently intervened to try to get him out of jail.
