An investigation is continuing into reports of mistreatment of animals on the Galway to Dublin rail line, which includes stops in Ballinasloe and Athlone.
In a statement, Irish Rail apologised to customers "who experienced any distress during their journey" on the 5pm service last Sunday.
It's reported that unaccompanied minors boarded the train in Ballinasloe were involved in abusing chickens, cats, and small birds on board.
The animals were reportedly kicked, burned, and confined in boxes during the journey.
It's understood the matter has been referred to the company's security team for further action.
