Reported cases of sexual assault and rape have increased by over 200% in Roscommon-Longford since 2003.
CSO data shows sexual assault and rape are on the rise, with a 214% increase in cases recorded in the Roscommon-Longford Garda Division since 2003, and 66 cases reported last year.
While a 111% increase was reported in Sligo-Leitrim, with 57 cases of rape or sexual assaults in the area in 2024.
Information released to Ireland South MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchú by the Irish Prison Service show that as of May of this year, there were 800 sexual offenders in Irish prisons costing the state almost €80 million annually to house.
