Capacity at Irish prisons is being stretched "far beyond its limits".
That's according to the head of the prison service as the numbers in jails hit over 500 at local prisons by the end of last year.
The Irish Prison Service's annual report shows there were 390 were in custody at Castlerea Prison, despite there being a bed capacity of 346.
While 123 were in custody at Loughan House, 20 less than its overall bed capacity at 143.
Deputy General Secretary of the Prison Officers Associaition and Leitrim native, Gabriel Keaveney says the conditions have a number of knock-on effects:
