The two presidential candidates have come head to head in today's debate.
It follows today's Business Post Red C poll showing Independent candidate Catherine Connolly on 36 per cent, with Fine Gael's Heather Humphreys on 25 per cent.
This afternoon's debate on the This Week show on RTÉ Radio 1 saw presenter David McCullagh interrogate the candidates about topics such as their stance on the Triple Lock and reconciliation on the island of Ireland.
When asked about a potential 'smear campaign' against Catherine Connolly, Heather Humphreys said her rival had 'legitimate' questions to answer on her efforts to employ a woman with a conviction for firearms offences.
