HSE West and North West has lodged a planning application for a major extenstion of the emergency department at Portiuncula University Hospital.
It's estimated the development will cost in the region of €12 million.
The planning application for a major extension of the emergency department at the Ballinasloe hospital was lodged with Galway County Council.
The development will consist of a new 310 metre square single story extension.
HSE West and North West says it's estimated the investment in Portiuncula University Hospital will be in the region of €12 million.
The extension will provide nine new patient cubicles, including gynaecology treatment room and associated staff and clinical support.
It will be linked to the existing building by a new accessible reception which will lead to a newly formed Paediatric waiting area and toilet facilities.
A new public entrance lobby with security room will be formed at the existing ground floor level.
This will be adjacent to a reconfigured ambulance drop-off and set-down area.
The existing emergency department will also undergo a series of phased internal refurbishment works.
Works will also include a reconfiguration of the existing two-way traffic flow on the campus.
This will become a one-way system around the Emergency Department extension and will feature a new set-down area.
Should the planning application be successful, HSE West North West says the project will then move to tender and the appointment of a contractor to commence construction
