Planning appeal lodged against new fast food drive thru

The appeal centres on concerns around noise, traffic and the site location.

A planning appeal has been lodged against permission for a new McDonald's drive-thru restaurant in Mullingar.

The project was approved by Westmeath County Council earlier this year and consists of a single-storey restaurant at the Lakepoint Retail & Business Park in Petitswood.

The application from includes car parking spaces, grill bays, EV charging spaces, bicycle parking, customer order points and digital menu boards.

The submission also proposes the development of a ESB substation and kiosk, landscaping including outdoor furniture and seating areas.

County planners approved the original plans with 18 conditions attached including a developer fee of over €12,600 and a rule that totem signage shall be reduced in height to integrate within the Lakepoint Retail Park.

A submission was issued against the original permission citing concerns over noise, traffic and site location, with those issues now the basis of a formal appeal to An Bord Pleanála.

The higher planning body will decide on the issue later this year.
