Over 500 prisoners committed to Castlerea prison so far this year

Over 500 prisoners have been committed to Castlerea Prison so far this year.

There were 52 committals alone in September while there were 40 prisoners released.

The figures were released as part of the Irish Prison Service's annual report.

This year, there have been 507 committals to Castlerea while there have been 434 releases.

The average number of persons in custody in Castlerea was 365 in September.

There were also 20 prisoners on temporary release and an average of 82 on remand or awaiting sentencing.

Nationally, there have been 5,976 committals so far this year, compared to 5,208 during the same period in 2022.
