Roscommon County Council received over 50 complaints of alleged unauthorised developments in the first nine months of this year.
An increasing number of cases are ending up in court.
Councils are responsible for ensuring people stick to conditions attached to planning applications.
They’re also responsible for investigating complaints of unauthorised developments - in other words, building work that’s done without planning permission.
Roscommon County Council got 67 enforcement complaints from the public last year.
They received 53 in the first nine months of this year.
In total, the council has 248 ‘open cases’ in its system now.
In its draft budget for 2026, the local authority says an increasing number of planning enforcement cases need to go to court, because people fail to comply with enforcement notices.
It also says an increasing number of court decisions are then appealed to a higher court.
