Over 200 learner drivers in the Shannonside region have been caught driving without a fully qualified motorist this year. 144 learners in Longford, Roscommon and Mayo have received a fine this year - along with 67 in Sligo-Leitrim. The figures are on track to exceed those for last year.
The standard punishment for the offence is a 160 fine and two penalty points. Leitrim Councillor Sean McGowan says the figures are alarming:
