The outgoing Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council has branded his time as first citizen 'an honour.' Councillor Mark Casey was voted in as Cathaoirleach in the days after the 2024 local election last June. Fine Gael councillors along with independent councillors Casey and Turlough McGovern reached the deal just two days after securing their seats. He's represented the council at a range of events, launches and openings over the last year, while chairing the monthly full council meeting.

The Cathaoirleach of a county council receives an allowance of €20,000 in addition to the €28,000 yearly remuneration for councillors. Speaking after his final monthly meeting of Longford County Council, the Lanesboro man says it's been a successful year overall for Longford.
