The Office of Public Works will carry out strategic maintenance on a well-known stretch of the Shannon in Lanesboro.
It follows a meeting between the OPW, Waterways Ireland and local representatives.
The area known locally as the 'hot stretch', due to an inflow of water from Lough Ree power station, was once a popular fishing spot.
Weeds will be removed and the canal reopened to increase flow in the stretch of waterway.
It's hoped maintenance works will help rejuvinate this part of the Shannon and bring anglers back.
