The official opening of the Garda Water Unit premises in Athlone is taking place this afternoon. The Water Unit provides support and search capability to other Garda units and outside agencies in marine environments. The Garda Water Unit was established in 1964 and currently consists of two operational teams based in Athlone and Santry in Co. Dublin. The Athlone premises is based in Garrycastle.
The water unit deploys on a national basis often in very challenging locations and difficult circumstances. The unit also carries out surface patrols throughout the country and around the Irish coastline. Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly, Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan and OPW Minister Kevin 'Boxer' Moran are all set to attend the opening this afternoon.
