The number of people in the Shannonside region who were banned from driving increased by over a fifth last year. They were either disqualified by the courts or because they got too many penalty points. There are two ways a driver can get disqualified from driving. A judge can ban them in court, or you can get disqualified because you get too many penalty points - 12 for a fully qualified driver or seven for a learner or novice motorist.
In the Shannonside region, there were a total of 414 disqualifications in 2025 - up from 339 the previous year. There was a 38 per cent increase in Longford - with 195 people banned last year, up from 141 the previous year. Leitrim had a 10 per cent increase, going from 50 to 55 across the two years. There was an 11 per cent rise in Roscommon, going from 148 to 164. Across all three countries, the majority were court disqualifications, with fewer coming from penalty points.
