A Westmeath Councillor says one of his aims is to see Athlone gain a city status.
Independent Councillor John Gibbons was co-opted onto Westmeath County Council last month.
He's taken the council seat of newly elected Longford-Westmeath TD Kevin 'Boxer' Moran following the General Election.
