A new domestic violence refuge for Athlone has moved a step closer, after government funding was officially approved.
The project, supported through the Capital Assistance Scheme, will create 12 safe units for women and children in crisis at Esker House.
Justice Minister James Browne says the move is part of Ireland's Zero Tolerance strategy on gender-based violence.
Along with Athlone Community Services Council, it will now begin detailed planning and design work.
