New Census figures could see more TDs from local constituencies

The constitution states that there must be one TD for every 30,000 people in the country.

Cenus 2022 could see major changes for future general elections in the Shannonside Region.

That's according to Dr Adrian Kavanagh from Maynooth University, who says the national population increase means there will be at least 11 extra TDs in the next Dáil.

The Department of Geography lecturer says the new data could see constituency boundaries redrawn and seats lost or gained in certain areas.

The number of TDs is constitutionally linked to the census, with one needed for every 30,000 people.

New population numbers mean there will need to be at least 171 TDs next time around, up from the current 160 members.

Speaking to the Joe Finnegan Show today, Dr. Kavanagh says that while Longford/Westmeath may gain an extra seat, Leitrim could loss one of theirs:
