A new report is recommending a new bypass for Boyle and an upgrade of the N61.
It found a lot of traffic going through the town is bound for Roscommon or Athlone.
Roscommon County Council has prepared a Draft Local Transport Plan for Boyle, which is currently on public display.
A traffic survey was conducted by consultants Transport Insights, who were appointed by the council.
It found the N61 and the Carrick Road carry the largest volumes of traffic entering and exiting Boyle town centre.
The N61 is the road that links Boyle to Athlone via Roscommon town.
The survey found the N61 section in Boyle carries more traffic than the N4 Boyle bypass.
It says this supports the case for a south Boyle bypass and the possible reclassification of the N61 as a national primary road.
The authors of the Boyle Local Transport Plan say they fully support further progression of an N61 Boyle South Ring Road, which would bypass the town.
But it's not recommended as part of this plan because of the cost.
But it's recommended the council seek opportunities to advance optioneering, planning, and delivery of the bypass in the long-term.
