Mural launched in Ballaghaderreen to mark forty years since abolition of corporal punishment

Corporal punishment was scrapped by then Education Minister John Boland in 1982.

A mural has been launched in Ballaghaderreen in remembrance of the abolition of corporal punishment over 40 years ago.
It was placed on the wall of the former De La Salle Brothers School, which is now the town's Family Resource Centre.

His daughter, Fine Gael TD Grace Boland, launched the mural in Ballaghaderreen today.
Deputy Boland said it was an emotional day for her family:

Former Irish Times correspondent Patsy McGarry is a past pupil of the De La Salle.
He says students were faced with the threat of violent punishment on a daily basis:
