More peatland expected to be rehabilitated across Longford and Roscommon

The harvesting of peat stopped in 2020.

An ecologist with Bord Na Mona says he expects more peatland in Longford and Roscommon will be rehabilitated soon after peat stocks are cleared.

Mark McCorry was speaking following figures released this week which showed just over 10,000 acres have been rewetted across Offaly and Galway in the last year.

The figures for Longford and Roscommon show just over 2,000 acres rehabilitated there in the last twelve months.

Bord Na Mona says the rewetted bogs will store vast amounts of carbon helping us to meet climate action targets, as well as helping sustain native wildlife.

Speaking to Shannonside Northern Sound this week ecologist Mark McCorry says they will be carrying out more rewetting on Longford and Roscommon bogs in the coming months..
