A third of parents across the Shannonside region would prefer a multi-denominational system of education.
That's according to the results of a recent national survey on school type preference, announced by the Minister for Education and Youth, Hildegarde Naughton.
Out of 200,000 households surveyed, 38 per cent of families in Co. Leitrim, 34.2 per cent of those in Co. Roscommon and 29.5 per cent in Co. Longford would seek the change.
This means local counties are among the top areas of the country where parents expressed a strong preference for their school's ethos to remain denominational.
But Schools Development Officer at Educate Together, Edward Platt, says there's a clear need for choice:
