Minister faces local criticism over support for fracked gas project
Minister Darragh O'Brien is facing criticism from the Save Leitrim group.

The Save Leitrim group says if the Shannon LNG project goes ahead it would have devastating consequences.

The Minister for Environment has come under fire locally for showing support for the Shannon LNG project. County Leitrim led the way to ban fracking in 2017 and its felt any move to introduce fracked gas through LNG would be a step backwards for climate action in the county. Shannon LNG was denied planning permission in 2023 on the basis of the ban.

However, it is reported Minister Darragh O'Brien has told planners that there is no longer a ban in place and they can go ahead with plans. Leitrim Councillor Eddie Mitchell, who is part of the Save Leitrim group says if it were to go ahead, it have devastating consequences.
