The development is part of a five-year national project to expand Ireland's radar network from two to seven sites.

Met Éireann is to submit a planning application to Roscommon County Council for a new weather radar at Cloonfad. The development is part of a five-year national project to expand Ireland's radar network from two to seven sites. The new radar will enhance rainfall monitoring and flood prediction, improving weather forecasting accuracy.

Located on Coillte land, the site has been chosen to minimize environmental and community impact. Cllr Paschal Fitzmaurice believes there would be a number of benefits to the local area:
