MEP calls for purpose built emergency community hubs for future disasters
Storm Éowyn damage at Mote Park in Co. Roscommon last year.

MEP Ciaran Mullooly says that the facilities should form part of a dedicated Civil Defence headquarters in each county.

The Government is being urged to set up a dedicated disaster response centre in each county in the event of another severe storm or other natural disaster.

MEP Ciaran Mullooly says that Civil Defence operations in the event of an emergency should be complimented with dedicated community support infrastructure.

The Midlands North West MEP made the call following the opening of the new three million euro Roscommon Civil Defence headquarters over the weekend.

The purpose built hub was designed by Collins Boyd Engineering and features a double height vehicle bay and an external Boat storage shed.

MEP Mullooly says that each Civil Defence headquarters should have a neighbouring property that can be used as an emergency response hub.

These would make accommodation, water, charging and cooking facilities available to the public in emergencies.
