Longford County Council has confirmed a major step forward for one of the town's most iconic buildings.
The Connolly Barracks reimagined project has now entered the tender stage.
Closed in 2009, the former barracks was bought by the local authority three years later.
It is funded under the Town Centre First Heritage Revival Scheme, which is a €90m fund to revitalise heritage buildings in Irish town centres for community use.
Longford County Council secured 100 per cent funding for the works, which will include a new arts space, county museum and associated amenities for the county town.
Also included are a creative makerspace, podcast and recording studios, music facilities, meeting rooms, and a new flexible conference and event space.
It is expected that the project will be finished in October 2027.
